FG lift suspension order on replacement and activivation of old SIM card

The Federal Government, Thursday, lifted the earlier suspension order on replacement and activation of old Subscriber Identification Module (SIM) card, but on the condition that the person must have enrolled and obtained the National Identification Number (NIN).

The federal government had on December 9, announced the suspension of the sale and activation of new SIM cards across networks.

The suspension order was expected to last till the completion of the audit of the Subscriber Registration Database, which seeks to achieve global standards and quality in the issuance of SIM Cards.

The Director, Public Affairs at NCC, Dr. Ikechukwu Adinde, who announced the suspension in a statement issued by the Commission, said the action became necessary in line with the federal government’s desire to consolidate the achievement of the SIM Card registration exercise of September 2019.

The Association of Licensed Telecoms Operators of Nigeria (ALTON) who conveyed the federal government’s lifting of suspension in a statement it issued, said: “Further to engagements with government on the matter, we are pleased to report that our members have been granted permission to carry out SIM replacement upon verification of the customer’s NIN. In this regard, our members are working with the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) to ensure seamless system connectivity for verification of NINs.”

The statement, which was signed by ALTON Chairman, Mr. Gbenga Adebayo and its Publicity Secretary, Mr. Damian Udeh, read: “We note the challenges experienced by customers seeking to replace or upgrade their SIM cards following the suspension of sale and activation of SIM cards by the government which also affected SIM replacement.

This followed the announcement that all telecom subscribers without NIN would be blocked. However, NCC has now extended the time for linking the NIN with sim cards to 19th of January, 2021 for subscribers with NIN while those without NIN have until 9th of February, 2021 to register & link it. The NCC also stated that USSD and verification charges remain suspended during these extensions. Igbo group writes Buhari, seeks review of recent police promotions

Backs Ohanaeze Ndigbo, rejects promotion of only one officer from S/East Alleges Nigeria unfair to region in recruitment, appointments, projects location, others By Joseph Erunke A South East professional group has bemoaned recent promotions made by the Police Service Commission (PSC),alleging that the zone was again, treated unfavorably.

The group under the aegis of Conference of Igbo Professionals Worldwide, in an open letter addressed to President Muhammadu Buhari, alleged that like in the past recruitments, appointments, promotions and allocation of resources, the region was denied its rightful place in the exercise carried out by the Commission. In the letter dated 26th, December, 2020 and titled,Unfair treatment of Ndigbo and Urgent Need to Right the Wrongs by Mr President “,the group alleged that out of the recent promotion of senior police officers, the South East was given one slot while some regions got over 12 slots.

The letter signed by the group’s National President, Prof. Patrick Kalu and National secretary, Dr Uche Mbaka, respectively, appealed to President Muhammadu Buhari and the National Assembly to not only set up a panel with a view to unraveling circumstances leading to unfair treatment of Igbo race in the country but also review the recent promotions of the police commission.

Hear it:”We wish to kindly draw your attention to the recent appointments made in the Nigeria Police Force by the Police Service Commission (PSC), under the chairmanship of the retired former Inspector General of Police, Musiliu Smith. “Recall that the Police Service Commission on Friday, December 18,2020,rose from its 10th plenary meeting with the promotion of 37 senior police officers to their next ranks. This action by the commission is highly commendable given that it would boost the morale of officers and men of the Force to serve their fatherland diligently and meritoriously. “However, we are constrained to point out that the exercise which ordinarily would have been effected in line with the country’s policy of equity and fairness, was regrettably skewed towards some regions at the detriment of the South East. “For instance,as observed by us,out of the figure mentioned earlier, the North West was apportioned 12 slots just as the North East was given 8 slots. The South West  on the other had, got 7 while the South South got 5 in that order. The North Central geopolitical region was given 4 slots. We regret to say here that unlike the zones mentioned, the South East region only got 1 slot. “This,to us,is the height of the ongoing desperate efforts of the current federal administration to completely alienate the Igbo race in the Nigeria project. This provocative action is condemnable and unacceptable to us.” The group told the president that,”The PSC may have drawn its inspiration to carry out this wicked action against Ndigbo from what has been in place since the emergence of your administration.” Listing the areas the Igbos were being marginalised in the nation’s scheme of things, the group insisted that the president must take urgent steps to “right the wrongs.” “These infractions included lopsided appointment of security chiefs; infrastructure deficit including roads, railway, and seaports; unfavourable allocations from the federal government; and concentration of interventions of development partners in other regions.

“Others are exclusion from commanding heights of the nation’s economy; delay in the passage of South East Development Commission Bill and flying the kite of the 2023 presidency. “We call on you sir, to address the principle of federal character in the distribution of public resources and appointive positions, especially security chiefs. ” Also, we appeal to the National Assembly to immediately step in with a view to stopping these unfair treatments of Ndigbo in Nigeria. This it can do by first of all set up a committee to investigate the reason for these actions by the government. “ According to the group, “Addressing the lopsided appointments of security chiefs is paramount due to increasing insecurity in the South East region.” ” We are threatened that given the current security architecture, a decision may be taken one day to eliminate all Igbo without their knowledge due to lack of representation,”it said. Going further, the group said:”The unfair treatments against us have continued to increase daily. We call on you sir, to re-write the wrongs meted against the Igbo ethnic nationality by your administration.” “Like our mother sociocultural body, Ohaneze Ndigbo had observed on the action of the Police Service Commission on the recent appointments in the Police, we hasten to condemn this repeated denial of people of Igbo extraction in major appointments in its entirety.

We feel this is not fair to a region that is at the forefront of Nigeria’s unity,” it added. It regretted that:”Owing to widespread allegations and reports of exclusion of the citizens of South East from several important federal appointments including top security appointments since the emergence of your government, we had expected that certain steps aimed at righting the past wrongs could have been taken by now.”  “Since you and your party, the All Progressives Congress (APC) have constantly denied hating the Igbo, we urge you to undertake certain actions aimed at convincing us that we have a place in the Nigeria project similar to other regions,” it told the president. ” We have an unwavering belief in the Nigeria project and feel strongly that we be accorded the same attention like others when it comes to issues of federal appointments. We deserve better life and fair treatment from our own country,”it said. It tasked the president to take actions that could deplete the ranks of Nnamdi Kanu’s followers, who it alleged, was brainwashing the youths of the zone to join in his inglorious activities, using the alleged unfair treatments of the Igbo race. “We recently observed that our fugitive son and founder of Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, was capitalising on these unfair treatments of Ndigbo in Nigeria to gain attention.

He succeeded in recruiting reasonable number of followers by using some of these indices mentioned above to convince them. “We vehemently rose against this act by Mr Kanu and called on our youths to denounce him and his activities. This has paid off as his ranks is being depleted considerably. “We appeal to you sir, to take steps aimed at not giving credence to the inglorious activities of this nature by stopping all actions that can fuel ethnic and religious bigotry in the country. You were elected as president of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and not any tribe or religion,” it said. It further said:”In the spirit of fair play, equity and justice, the Conference of Igbo Professionals Worldwide, appeals to you sir,to order a review of recent police promotion exercise with a view to correcting the imbalance observed in it.”

The House of Representatives has proposed a bill that will legalise the cultivation, sale and use of cannabis

The House of Representatives has proposed a bill that will legalise the cultivation, sale and use of cannabis better known as marijuana or Indian hemp in Nigeria. The bill, which has already been read the first time and was slated for second reading before the House proceeded on Christmas and New Year break is sponsored by Hon. Miriam Onuoha (APC, Imo). Onuoha, who represents Isiala Mbano/ Onuimo/ Okigwe federal constituency of Imo State, is a firsttimer in the lower chamber after defeating her closest rival Obinna Onwubuariri of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the rerun election that was held in 18 polling units in the constituency in January this year. It is titled “A bill for an act to decriminalise the growth and use of cannabis, to establish a system for the registration and licensing of cannabis growers, users and control, to legalise the growth, sale and use of cannabis and set out a legal framework for the registration and licensing of cannabis growers and producers in Nigeria; and for related matters.” Although the bill was listed on the order paper on December 21, it could not be debated due to the absence of the sponsors on the floor of the House. New Telegraph investigation revealed that the proposed legislation will be considered when the House reconvene on January 26, 2021. A synopsis of the bill obtained by New Telegraph shows that it is “to regulate the cultivation, possession, availability and trade in cannabis for medical and research purposes.” The objectives of the bill include to: “Provide for a registration and licensing system for cannabis farmers and processors; establish a registration and licensing system for cannabis farmers and processors; regulate the cultivation, processing, availability and trade of cannabis for medical purposes and promote public awareness about the cultivation, processing, availability and trade of cannabis for medicinal and research purposes and its use in relation to medical or health purpose.” The bill, however, prohibits issuance of cannabis licence for medical use if such a person is without a proof that “he is either a medical doctor and intends to use it for medical purposes or a pharmaceutical company who intends to use an amount of cannabis, which may be determined as required, in producing a medicine for the cure of a certain disease or an epidemic.” When this bill is passed, Nigeria will join the league of 30 other countries that have legalised the use of cannabis. They include Argentina, Australia, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech, Denmark and Finland. Others are Germany, Greece, Israel, Netherlands, Norway, Peru, Italy, Poland, Jamaica, Lesotho, Romania and Dan Marino. The rest are Luxemburg, Switzerland, Macedonia, Tury, Malta, Mexico, Uruguay and Zimbabwe. https://www.newtelegraphng.com/reps-move-to-legalise-use-sale-of-cannabis-in-nigeria/

Saudi Arabia bans underage marriage – a move that protects the rights of children

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has taken a step in the right direction, like its neighbours, with an unspoken caveat. The Islamic epicentre has set a minimum age for marriage at 18 years old.

The Minister of Justice and Chairman of the Supreme Judicial Council, Sheikh Walid Al-Samaani, issued the new directive in a circular sent to all the courts in The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

Why we are excited? There are some 750 million child brides globally – an epidemic by all measures. The Middle East adds 700,000 child brides every year to that.

Saudi Arabia’s move to update its marriage laws is a huge deal for many reasons.

The Middle East is home to over 40 million child brides and counting.

Saudi Arabia is easily the most influential state in the region due to its religious relevance to over 2 billion Muslims worldwide. The United Arab Emirates (UAE), for all its economic importance in the region, cannot compare.

Just this year, the UAE lifted the ban on the consumption of alcohol and cohabitation between unmarried couples of the opposite sex. The relaxation of the laws was met with general indifference from the Muslim world, why? It is just Dubai, and Dubai will do what Dubai does – make money.

With Saudi Arabia, there is a lingering hope that this will give the Muslim world pause, particularly troubled regions in Africa that look up to the kingdom. Northern Nigeria and some parts of North Africa will benefit from arriving at an understanding of religion that allows both regions to create provisions that could potentially better protect children.

Without a doubt, there exists the depressing possibility that unregistered marriages will continue to fly under the radar. Turkey, which has a legal marriage age of 18 with marriage at 17 allowed with legal tender, continues to have child brides – many from the Syrian refugee community of over 3 million.

The legal framework protecting children is however good regardless. The case of a 9-year-old Yemeni girl married to a man five times her age, who then managed to go to court for redress and won her freedom, puts this in perspective.

Children shouldn’t have to fight to have a decent life, but if they must, the better to have a fighting chance like the one a protective legal framework provides

Whatsapp To Stop Working On Millions Of Phones From January 1

A new WhatsApp update will prevent the popular messaging app from working on millions of phones from 1 January 2021. Older Android and iPhone devices will no longer support the latest version of the app, forcing owners to either update their mobile operating system or buy a new smartphone. Any iPhone not running iOS 9 or newer, or any phone not running at least Android 4.0.3 – also known as Ice Cream Sandwich – will no longer be able to open or operate the Facebook-owned app. This means all iPhone models up to the iPhone 4 will be unable to support WhatsApp, as these phones are not capable of updating to iOS 9. The iPhone 4S, iPhone 5, iPhone 5S, iPhone 6 and iPhone 6S were all released before iOS 9, however owners can still update to the operating system if they are yet to do so. Android phones that will lose WhatsApp support include the Samsung Galaxy S2, HTC Desire and LG Optimus Black. Phone owners can see what software their device is using by checking the settings section. For iPhone users, this can be found under Settings > General > Software update. Most of the 2 billion WhatsApp users around the world will not be hit by the change, though the small fraction that are will likely comprise several million people worldwide. A similar update at the start of 2020 saw WhatsApp make the “tough decision” of ending support for even older phones. Phones set to lose WhatsApp support on 1 January 2021: Apple iPhone 1-4 Samsung Galaxy S2 HTC Desire LG Optimus Black Motorola Droid Razr Any Android released before 2010 Phones that will need to update to at least iOS 9 or Android OS 4.0.3: Apple iPhone 4S iPhone 5 iPhone 5S iPhone 6 iPhone 6S Samsung Galaxy S3 and newer Samsung Galaxy Note HTC Sensation HTC Thunderbolt LG Lucid Motorola Droid 4 Sony Xperia Pro and newer The messaging giant will also be updating its Terms of Service next year, forcing users to agree to new privacy rules in order to keep using the app. Earlier this month, WhatsApp confirmed to The Independent that all users “must agree" to the new terms by 8 February 2021 or else lose access to their chats.

A New Population of Blue Whales Was Discovered Hiding in the Indian Ocean

Weighing up to 380,000 pounds and stretching some 100 feet long, the blue whale — the largest creature to have ever lived on Earth — might at first seem difficult for human eyes and ears to miss. But a previously unknown population of the leviathans has long been lurking in the Indian Ocean, leaving scientists none the wiser, new research suggests. The covert cadre of whales, described in a paper published last week in the journal Endangered Species Research, has its own signature anthem: a slow, bellowing ballad that’s distinct from any other whale song ever described. It joins only a dozen or so other blue whale songs that have been documented, each the calling card of a unique population. “It’s like hearing different songs within a genre — Stevie Ray Vaughan versus B. B. King,” said Salvatore Cerchio, a marine mammal biologist at the African Aquatic Conservation Fund in Massachusetts and the study’s lead author. “It’s all blues, but you know the different styles.” The find is “a great reminder that our oceans are still this very unexplored place,” said Asha de Vos, a marine biologist who has studied blue whales in the Indian Ocean but was not involved in the new study. Dr. Cerchio and his colleagues first tuned into the whales’ newfound song while in scientific pursuit of a pod of Omura’s whales off the coast of Madagascar several years ago. After hearing the rumblings of blue whales via a recorder planted on the coastal shelf, the researchers decided to drop their instruments into deeper water in the hopes of eavesdropping further. “If you put a hydrophone somewhere no one has put a hydrophone before, you’re going to discover something,” Dr. Cerchio said. A number of blue whale populations, each with its own characteristic croon, have long been known to visit this pocket of the Indian Ocean, Dr. Cerchio said. But one of the songs that crackled through the team’s Madagascar recordings was unlike any the researchers had heard. By 2018, the team had picked up on several more instances of the new whales’ now-recognizable refrain. Partnerships with other researchers soon revealed that the distinctive calls had been detected at another recording outpost off the coast of Oman, in the Arabian Sea, where the sounds seem particularly prevalent. Another windfall came later that year when Dr. Cerchio learned that colleagues in Australia had heard the whales crooning the same song in the central Indian Ocean, near the Chagos Archipelago. Data amassed from the three sites, each separated from the others by hundreds or thousands of miles, painted a rough portrait of a pod of whales moseying about in the Indian Ocean’s northwest and perhaps beyond. Using acoustic data to pin down a new population is, by nature, indirect, like dusting for fingerprints at the scene of a crime. But Alex Carbaugh-Rutland, who studies blue whales at Texas A&M University and was not involved in the study, said the results “were very sound, no pun intended.” The researchers ruled out the possibility that the songs could be attributed to other species of whales. And side-by-side comparisons of the new blue whale tune with others showed convincingly that the northwestern Indian Ocean variety was distinct, Mr. Carbaugh-Rutland said. “I think it’s really compelling evidence,” he said, drawing a comparison to linguistic dialects. Genetic samples would help clinch the case, he added. But blue whales, which spend most of their time far from shore, are difficult to study. Whaling in the 19th and 20th centuries also culled hundreds of thousands from their ranks; an estimated 10,000 to 25,000 blue whales are thought to remain. Not much is known about blue whale songs, although most researchers think that they help males woo their mates, as is the case with closely-related species. That can make any modifications to a cetacean melody fairly high stakes, Dr. de Vos said: “If two populations can’t talk to each other, over time, they’re going to grow apart.” Eventually, populations with different takes on a tune might splinter into subspecies, with their own behaviors and quirks. There’s not yet evidence to show that has happened with these blue whales, nor much information on what might have driven them apart from their southerly kin. But even if the whales in this new group don’t yet formally occupy a new branch on the tree of life, they are worth getting to know. “What things like this show us is that there are different populations, with different adaptations, with potentially different needs,” Dr. de Vos said. To conserve the world’s blue whales, she said, “there’s not one single protection measure that’s going to work.”

Most important Indian' Hank Adams dies

Hank Adams, one of Indian Country’s most prolific thinkers and strategists, has died at age 77. Adams was called the "most important Indian” by influential Native American rights advocate and author Vine Deloria Jr., because he was involved with nearly every major event in American Indian history from the 1960s forward. He was perhaps best known for his work to secure treaty rights, particularly during the Northwest “fish wars” of the 1960s and ’70s. Henry “Hank” Adams, Assiniboine-Sioux, died Dec. 21 at St. Peter’s Hospital in Olympia, Washington, according to the Northwest Indian Fisheries Commission. “Hank’s a genius. He knows things we don’t know. He sees things we don’t see,” attorney Susan Hvalsoe Komori said when Adams was awarded the 2006 American Indian Visionary Award by Indian Country Today. “Adams was always the guy under the radar, working on all kinds of things,” said the late Billy Frank Jr., Nisqually and chairman of the Northwest Indian Fisheries Commission. Adams was born in Wolf Point, Montana. Toward the end of World War II, his family moved to Washington state, where he attended Moclips-Aloha High School near the Quinault Nation. He played football and basketball and served as student body president and editor of the school newspaper and yearbook. In 1963, Adams joined the National Indian Youth Council, where he began to focus on treaty rights just as the fish wars were beginning and Northwest tribes were calling on the federal government to recognize their treaty-protected fishing rights. Adams had so many personal connections with people from that era, such as Mel Thom, Clyde Warrior and Willie Hensley. It was while Adams was working with the youth council that he first met Marlon Brando. The actor would be prominent later in the Frank’s Landing protests. Also through the youth council, Adams began working at Frank’s Landing, on Washington’s Nisqually River, with Billy Frank and others who were striving to advance the treaty right to fish for salmon. “That turned into a civil rights agenda,” Adams said in an interview. “It had been brutal from 1962 onward, and there were just a few fishermen down there, fighting with their families for their rights.” To make a point, Adams refused induction into the military because the U.S. was failing to live up to its treaty obligations. (He eventually served for two years in the U.S. Army.) As Washington state’s fish wars heated up in the 1960s, Adam was often working with Frank and other Northwest leaders on a strategy of civil disobedience through “fish-ins.” Frank told a story about a 1968 fishing protest in Olympia “where all the police are.” But not everyone was supposed to be arrested. Frank said it was the job of Adams, the “visionary,” to protect them all. But when the arrests were made, “here comes our visionary.” "I said, ‘What are you doing here? You’re supposed to get us out. You’re the strategist, thinking way out into the future,’” Frank said. It was from those many trips to jail that eventually treaty-protected fishing rights were upheld by the U.S. Supreme Court. The Boldt decision affirmed the tribal right to fish in the usual and accustomed places in common with other citizens. Adams’ role in the trial, which took place in Tacoma, Washington, was unprecedented. He was a lay-lawyer representing tribal fishing people and the last person to speak at trial. The judge considered Adams the most informed person to explain both the treaty and the people. As the court case made its way through the process, Adams and Billy Frank found a way to meet with Judge George Boldt in chambers. “We don’t want to talk to you about the case,” Adams recalled at the 40th anniversary dinner of the Boldt decision. Instead, the pair met with the judge to tell them that Montana Sen. Lee Metcalf was an admirer of the judge, who was also from Montana. They swapped Montana stories. And, the joke was the case could be resolved if it was just Montanans in the room. The Supreme Court affirmed treaty rights and the Boldt decision in a series of cases in 1975. Shortly before the 1972 election, a caravan of American Indians traveled from points across the country to Washington to protest broken treaties. After failed negotiations for housing, the protest ended up at the Bureau of Indian Affairs. And when the bureaucrats left for the day, the protestors remained. Adams was also instrumental in resolving the 1972 takeover of the Bureau of Indian Affairs. Richard Nixon’s special assistant, Leonard Garment, said Adams’ role was essential. He said the story could have been tragic, with some in the administration calling for a military assault on the building. Adams was both a public foil and a behind-the-scenes negotiator. The Trail of Broken Treaties submitted a plank of 20 proposals. Adams called the Nixon administration’s response “almost totally devoid of positive comment.” But privately Adams and Garment worked on a resolution. Adams’ reward for being an intermediary? He was arrested in 1973 and his home searched for “government documents.” “Plus they took my typewriter, which I’d had since 1968 during our encampment on the Nisqually River,” Adams said. A federal grand jury refused to indict Adams (along with journalists who had been reporting on the incident), and eventually Deputy Attorney General William Ruckelshaus ordered the material returned. He “directed the FBI to return everything that they’d taken from me and particularly my typewriter,” Adams said with a laugh. Adams played a similar role during the standoff at 1973 Wounded Knee. He said a government helicopter flew him to White Clay, Nebraska, where he was to meet with the Justice Department’s Community Relations Service. After that meeting, Adams was set to meet in Denver with Marlon Brando. The Justice Department was supposed to drive Adams back to the airport, but “they ran out of gas within sight of the airport.” Adams laughed. “The federal government doesn’t run out of gas. They didn’t want me to meet with Marlon Brando” and stir up public support for the occupation. Using social media, Adams was meticulous over the years in his documentation of family histories, often used to help people grieve over the loss of family, or to call out people who lied and claimed Indigenous ancestry. He continued to monitor and press for treaty rights. And for Leonard Peltier’s release from prison. Adams' family said a funeral is not possible at this time, but it will coordinate a memorial in the near future.

Popular Nigerian filmmaker, Chico Ejiro, is dead.

It was gathered that he died on Friday – Christmas Day – about 2am. Ejiro was popular for his blockbuster movies in the 90s. He produced movies like Silent Night, Blood Money, Deadly Affair, among several other notable movies. In a phone conversation with The PUNCH, his colleague and close friend, Zik Zulu, said, “Yes, it is true, Chico Ejiro is dead.” Also, the President of the Actors Guild of Nigeria, Emeka Rollas, confirmed the filmmaker’s death. He said, “I just learnt of his death. The news of his death is so devastating. I do not know the cause of his death; I am still calling around to get the proper information and I am waiting for his association ― The Association of Movie Producers ― to make a statement.” However, a source close to the deceased revealed that Ejiro died about 2 am on Christmas Day. “He was ill about five weeks ago and he was rushed to a hospital in Surulere where he was placed on admission. After about a week, he was discharged and he went back home to recuperate. “From what he said, he had high blood pressure that led to some heart complications. He was recuperating and got better. He even started a production that he was shooting about four days ago but he was not fully involved. “He was just like the supervising director. He will go to the location and supervise them, so, we all felt that he was good. Although he kept saying that he had not gotten back to his full health; he was still very weak. We were shocked about his death because he was even talking to some of his friends till late last night. I learnt he died about 2 am this morning,” the source said.

Lil Pump Disses Eminem in Instagram Video: 'You Is Lame as Hell'

Although Eminem has yet to say anything, Royce da 5'9" has responded to Lil Pump's diss. "I'll slap them glasses so far off his face, they'll land in a whole nother genre," Royce wrote on IG. "Not cuz I’m mad but just cuz I'm exhausted with all the tuff talk from all these harmless creatures... Enjoy yourself. You actually make money off blatant misappropriation while not being really good at anything." See original story below. The holidays typically signal a time of spreading peace and joy, but Lil Pump is once again throwing all respectability and common sense out the window to stir up some end-of-year beef with Eminem. For some reason, the young Florida rapper decided to go after Slim Shady in a new Instagram video. On Christmas Eve, no less. "F*ck Eminem, you is lame as hell, ain't nobody listening to your old ass,” the 20-year-old ranted. "You lame as f*ck, b*tch! I woke up on bullshit today, I'm back on my f*ck shit." Back on his bullshit indeed, especially considering the Detroit legend literally just dropped his surprise album Music to Be Murdered By – Side B, which is expected to debut in the No. 3 spot on the Billboard 200 chart. Meanwhile, Pump last made headlines for backing Donald Trump in the 2020 election, despite not being registered to vote. He was also dragged for his "Lil Pimp Big MAGA Steppin" track. People online quickly clocked Pump’s trolling as opportunistic, hoping Em might shine a spotlight on him in a future diss track. We’ll see if the “Zeus” rapper will waste his time responding to Pump’s disrespect.

Billion-Dollar Wealth Manager Skybridge Capital Plans to Launch a Bitcoin Fund

In mid-November, a filing registered with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) had shown that the investment firm Skybridge Capital may invest in crypto assets like bitcoin. Over a month later, Skybridge Capital filed another registration form with the U.S. SEC (Form D) as it plans to launch a bitcoin fund. The wealth management firm run by Anthony Scaramucci, Skybridge Capital, is launching a bitcoin fund called the Skybridge Bitcoin Fund L.P. The news of the Skybridge’s fund stems from a Form D Securities and Exchange Commission filing. The New York-based company manages over $9.2 billion assets under management (AUM) and the filing shows it wants to manage a bitcoin (BTC) fund for accredited investors. According to the filing submitted on December 21, 2020, it will be for accredited investors who can purchase $50k or more. It’s a pooled investment and hedge fund, and as for the issuance-size Skybridge has declined to disclose. Further, the Skybridge Bitcoin Fund will follow Rule 506(c) that allows the solicitation and general advertisement of the offering to accredited investors. Skybridge Capital was founded in 2005 by Anthony Scaramucci, Brett S. Messing, Raymond Nolte, and Troy Gaveski. The news of the Skybridge Bitcoin Fund filing on Monday follows the company explaining that the firm’s G II Fund “may hold long and short positions in digital assets.” Of course, after the Form D filing was revealed for the Skybridge Bitcoin Fund, bitcoin proponents discussed the entry on social media and forums. “Boom! Skybridge Capital is doubling down on Bitcoin,” tweeted Kevin Rooke. “They just registered the Skybridge Bitcoin Fund with the SEC, one month after allowing two of their other funds to invest in bitcoin.” The founder of Skybridge Anthony Scaramucci was also a former White House director of communications. Scaramucci has said in an interview that “a fan” of cryptocurrencies and believes that “digital assets have a future.” The Skybridge founder also did an interview with Anthony ‘Pomp’ Pompliano and discussed bitcoin and the current structural issues in America. “There’s something here,” Scaramucci told Pompliano. “There’s value to the notion that I can exchange value with you, confidentially — and I can exchange it through a mechanism that looks very secure.” “Blockchain is going to get tighter, and more reformed, and more secure,” Scaramucci added. “People are going to have more confidence in it, and I don’t think it can be stopped.” What do you think about Skybridge Capital registering to launch a bitcoin fund? Let us know what you think about this subject in the comments section below.

Why Bitcoin Is Falling, And What It Means

Cryptocurrencies are the new “golden child” in some investing circles. Bitcoin is the new hot commodity so to speak. But is it new revolution, or just a new signal of market speculation? The answer may be both. Let’s explore this. In the aggregate, the market seems to have made some temporary conclusions about Bitcoin. To be clear, this is an evolution. As Bitcoin and crypto as financial instruments take on a life of their own, I see a recent pattern. Bitcoin is behaving as a proxy for taking investment risk. In other words, its price is being driven not by fundamental value, but by folks on the hunt for a near-term profit. How else do you explain the gyrations of the past few years? After all, this is alleged to be akin to a currency. The only currencies whose values hop around like Bitcoin are from emerging nations in the 1970s. That is, where the only consistent thing was instability. Bitcoin was at one point rationalized as the new gold. In other words, it was where investors fled when they wanted something physical and solid, when they lost faith in traditional, government-backed currencies. Below is a chart of 3 investments: The Nasdaq 100 Index, an ETF (symbol GBTC) based on the movement of the price of Bitcoin, and a gold ETF. But Bitcoin and gold have been travelling in opposite directions more than they have been in sync. This is different from in the past. And it adds to the case that Bitcoin is its own animal, one driven more by speculation than fundamental or even “flight to safety” factors. Lately, Bitcoin is acting much more like a leveraged stock ETF than a currency, or a successor to the global banking and “fiat currency” system that some claim it will be. But that doesn’t mean it isn’t a useful consideration for some portfolios. Ycharts.com If you have the risk tolerance (and that’s up to you, not anyone else), Bitcoin’s pros and cons are clear. The pros are evident from some of the temporary price gains. The cons are that it moves like you might expect a new-era, heavily-hyped but potentially valuable asset type to move - with high volatility, and based on factors that are difficult to put our fingers on. I think that for now, Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies are destined to remain as-is: they are proxies for the market’s desire and willingness to take on big risk to pursue big return, especially over short-term periods of time. In that respect, it is something that can be considered as part of whatever set of high-volatility, tactical assets you consider within your research process. Just do not be fooled: Bitcoin is not a panacea. It’s a trading vehicle, at least for now. And its recent hints of at least a temporary price top, after a strong rally, is likely an indicator of market risk-taking pulling back as well.

On the other hand, M&M, Bajaj Auto, Tech Mahindra and Bajaj Finserv were among the laggards. Barring auto, most of the sectoral indices traded in positive range, he said, adding that volatility index shot up sharply, indicating unease about current valuations of the market. "PSU stocks remained in flavour as valuations comfort, favourable dividend yields and emerging clarity over efficient capital employment continued to attract investors," he stated. Further, positive data flows along with persistent foreign fund flows have been quite supportive for the markets. Foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) remained net buyers in the capital markets as they purchased shares worth Rs 4,195.43 crore on Friday, according to provisional exchange data. Elsewhere in Asia, bourses in Shanghai and Tokyo ended on a positive note, while Hong Kong and Seoul were in the red. Stock exchanges in Europe were trading with gains in early deals. Best steam cleaners: 10 of the best steam cleaners you can buy

Designed to blitz away bacteria, steam cleaning could be the answer to keeping our homes safe, clean and germ-free. Heat treatment has been shown to be effective at killing viruses like Coronavirus. The Government advises using a steam cleaner to disinfect items that you can’t launder or clean using regular detergents, such as soft furnishings, upholstery, mattresses, and other surfaces used by multiple people. Steam cleaners are an excellent solution for eliminating bacteria on a range of surfaces including sealed floors, tiles, ovens, windows; with some even able to clean and freshen up carpets. Steam cleaning requires nothing more than water from your tap, and you won’t need detergents or harsh chemical products. What is the best floor steam cleaner to buy? There are three main types of steam cleaner, so it’s worth thinking about what you’re going to want from yours before you buy. read also: talking toilet papaer Steam mops These tend to be more compact and lightweight, easy to set up and ready to use in a matter of seconds. They work like a normal mop but with more cleaning power. They have a water tank attached to the handle, and should heat up in about 20 seconds. They'll need refilling more often than cylinder cleaners, though. Many come with a swivel head, making it easy to manoeuvre and reach under furniture and kitchen appliances. While they’re best at cleaning sealed hard floors, many steam mops can also refresh carpets and rugs when used with the necessary attachment. Most of the mops in our top ten can double up as handheld units, unless otherwise specified. Cylinder steam cleaners Cylinder models are usually heavier but have wheels to move them around the home. They tend to have the same functions as two-in-one mops, but with a more powerful steam output along with higher capacity water tanks that need refilling much less often. They often have several attachments that you connect to the hose and can clean a wide range of areas. There are some models that you can use on upholstery, but others won’t be suitable. Look for one with variable steam for greater versatility. Two-in-one steam cleaners These act like a regular steam mop, but with the added benefit of a detachable handheld component. They've got more tools for different jobs that you can use to clean bathroom tiles, kitchen tops, and other washable surfaces. They can do the same cleaning tasks as cylinders, but with a smaller water tank capacity and lower power output. The handheld element is great for quick tasks, like cleaning the hob, the base of your oven or tiles. Key features to look out for In addition to accessories, there are some extra features you may wish to consider. Water tank capacity The smaller the water tank, the more often you’ll have to top it up. The larger the tank, the longer it’ll take to heat up before it’s ready to use, but it will last longer. Cylinder models tend to have large capacities, with some holding up to two litres, while steam mops tend to have somewhere between 250-450ml. It’s also good to note whether the tank is detachable and easy to fill at the tap, or if you need to fill it with a jug. Time to heat up full tank How long a steam cleaner takes to heat up before it starts pumping out steam when filled with cold or room temperature water is largely determined by the size of the tank. This may be as little as 20 seconds for a steam mop and two minutes for a cylinder. This can vary greatly between models. Variable steam All but one of the models in our top ten have variable steam settings, be it an adjustable control dial or buttons for different settings. But don’t be put off if there’s only one setting. If you’re only using the cleaner for quick and simple tasks, it should still get the job done just as well. What steam cleaner accessories do I need? The majority of steam cleaners come equipped with accessories that can be attached to the cleaner to tackle a variety of jobs. With standard steam mops that don’t have a detachable unit, like this Shark model, the only extras that come with these are often limited to one or two additional cleaning pads for the floorhead. However, with cylinders and two-in-ones, you’ll get the likes of scrubbing brushes, scrapers and grout cleaners for super-thorough cleaning. Plus attachments for specific surfaces: upholstery tools, ironing attachments for curtains and squeegees for windows and glass. Some models come with detergent – for an appealing fresh scent, rather than extra cleaning power. How we test steam cleaners At the Good Housekeeping Institute We clean ceramic tiles, vinyl floors, inside an oven, gas hobs, windows and, if applicable, carpet with each steam cleaner we test. We make sure to use them in the same way you would at home. The best steam cleaners can do all these tasks without a problem. For steam mops, we test them on hard flooring, noting how long it takes to remove food stains and muddy deposits. We look at how easy the mop is to move around awkward areas, and if the floor is shiny and streak-free after cleaning. With cylinders and two-in-one models, we also test their attachments. We remove dried food on the hob, clean tiles and grouting, brighten windows and glass shower doors. We use the scrubbing brushes, the window squeegee and the carpet attachment to clean muddy footprint marks. We also look at whether the controls are easy to navigate, how quickly the cleaner heats up and if the attachments are easy to fit. We check the design too, assessing if the cleaner has variable steam and if there are a good range of tools. 1 Best steam cleaner Karcher SC5 EasyFix Premium Steam Cleaner Karcher's most powerful steam cleaner is a large cylinder model, coming with ample accessories to cover most household cleaning tasks. We found it straightforward to put together, and the high-capacity 1.5-litre water tank, and 0.5L steam boiler water reservoir mean you won’t run out of steam quickly. Given the size of the water tank, it heats up in a surprisingly speedy three minutes and has a great range of variable steam. It scored top marks cleaning for ceramic tiles without causing any further mess, and left vinyl flooring shiny without us needing to scrub. It also left windows spotless and they dried fast. This one scored almost top marks on our oven and hob cleaning tests. However, it did produce a lot of steam quickly and with that came excess water, which meant some mopping up between cleaning. That said, we think this is a small price to pay when weighing up its cleaning performance. The handy display unit lets you know when the 1.3L water tank is ready to go, taking under five minutes. It also lets you know when it needs refilling. It has a lot of attachments, and also comes with a carpet accessory for sanitising and refreshing carpets and soft furnishings. All the accessories fit on board the machine, so you can take them with you around the house for convenience - plus the whole setup will take up less storage space than some. We were very impressed with its cleaning performance. It did especially well when cleaning carpets, ceramic tiles and sealed floors, removing muddy stains with ease. The bristles from the brush at the back of the floorhead worked well at scrubbing more embedded dirt from the carpet. This helped to soften and lift dirt away without affecting the carpet fibres. We found when cleaning smaller surfaces, most notably ovens and hobs, the steam caused dirt to splatter on surrounding areas. And this meant we spent more time cleaning. But, if you’re looking for a durable and efficient all-in-one, this is a great investment. The dual-sided touch-free pads mean you can flip the cleaning cloth over on to the other side for twice the cleaning area per pad. And you can release them and reload with a fresh cloth at the press of a button. The cleaning performance on hard floors was impressive, scoring just shy of top marks at cleaning up our vinyl flooring. It dried quickly and the cleaner left it shiny. It was also able to reach under furniture and kitchen appliances with ease. The steam blast feature activates a direct blast of concentrated steam for those stubborn stains. The cleaner feels light and well-balanced in use, and the only downside is that it’s designed for use on hard and sealed floors only. If you need it to clean more areas, you may prefer a model with more accessories or detachable handheld unit. The cleaner is ready to use in around 20 seconds and there is a good range of variable steam options. We did find the steam output was hard to control; once it reaches the output you've selected it takes a few seconds to register before reducing. It scored very well across the board in all our tough cleaning tests, though, leaving tiles shining and easily lifting dried-on stains on vinyl flooring. It cleaned our gas hob quickly too, and the results on the oven were similar although it took a bit of extra scrubbing on tougher dirt. This cleaner also did a good job on windows but we noticed it left quite a lot of streaks behind. We loved how comfortable it is to hold and it's not bulky. It’s a powerful machine that reaches steam temperatures up to 135C with a steam output of 120g/min. There is only one steam setting, though, and it's a bit too powerful for lighter cleaning jobs. The cleaner is heavy too, weighing 5.6kg with a full tank of water, and it also takes more than eight minutes to heat up a full tank of water. If time isn't an issue, it’s a worthy investment for its cleaning power and the range of jobs it tackles. We were especially pleased with its window cleaning ability. It blasted away embedded dirt without much effort, drying fast and leaving the glass shiny and smear-free. It cleaned vinyl flooring with just as much ease, and the swivel floorhead made it easy to get into awkward areas. It is too bulky to be able to clean underneath appliances though. We did find it less efficient for oven cleaning - while it softened and lifted dirt away with ease, it caused a lot of splattering of food deposits around the oven. It cleans not only hard flooring but it can also sanitise carpets and rugs. Its floorhead is designed to reach into corners and you can use the bristle brush at the back to scrub stubborn dirt. It's flexible and we were able to reach under areas that otherwise would be tricky to get to. We found the range of steam made light work of cleaning a range of surfaces. It's good at cleaning hard flooring and leaves it looking shiny, without streaks. It also cleaned up our windows, oven and gas hob. But when using the small round brushes for cleaning the oven and hobs, they did get dented and damaged after only one use. We also found the hose quite heavy, and this sometimes interfered with our cleaning. The cleaner claims to be suitable for carpets, but we found it didn’t do as well as we expected. That said, if it’s freshening up you’re looking for, it works well enough. And on all other surfaces, it proved itself as an efficient machine. You can adjust the variable steam with the round dial, and we found a full tank of water heated up in less than 20 seconds. While the detachable handheld unit covers a range of cleaning tasks, we found it heavy at the wrist after a while. We would recommend it for quicker clean-ups rather than for doing everything in one go. We found it worked well at cleaning ceramic tiles, gas hobs in particular. It also earned a high score for oven cleaning performance, although the more ingrained dirt on the oven base required scrubbing and we needed to mop up afterwards. It did leave some streaking too. On hard floors, it collected all residues of dirt and manoeuvred around the room with ease. The overall strong performance makes this one good value for money. You can customise the steam output by mopping faster to produce more steam. Also, the ‘steam blaster’ feature emits a concentrated blast of steam by pumping the handle. We were impressed that the tank heats up in less than 30 seconds and can be easily topped up using the included filling flask. The cleaning performance on our vinyl flooring was impressive, requiring no scrubbing to remove dirt. It left our floor shiny and quick to dry. It did leave some minor streaks behind which we found needed only another few sweeps to remove. There are no other controls, even an on/off switch, so the cleaner will continue to steam unless switched off at the mains. Overall, we rate this steam mop and find it the ideal replacement for a mop and bucket in homes with hard floors. It delivered good results when cleaning the hob and hard floors, but was less effective on stubborn grease in the oven. It also left floors dry within seconds. It has a wide range of accessories that make it versatile. It converts into a useful handheld for versatility too. The water tank heats up in a somewhat slow three minutes, but if you don’t mind the wait it’s well worth it for the results. On test, we found it impressed on all surfaces. It made windows clean, shiny and streak-free, did a great job of making the gas hob spotless, and made vinyl flooring sparkle. Using it as a handheld is straightforward – you add the included extension tube to the handheld unit to use as a mop. If you have a large surface area of hard sealed flooring to clean, we found it a little heavy to manoeuvre for a long time, though. It’s better suited for smaller sections of flooring. Unfortunately, there's no variable steam or a light to let you know when the steam is ready, so it takes a bit of guessing to know when it's ready to go. Audi Q3 Sportback combines styling flair with utility

Audi Q3 Sportback combines styling flair with utility Less rear headroom, but this SUV-coupe has edgy styling and a great ride in Motoring / Reviews by Denis Droppa The Q3 Sportback has both practicality and posing appeal. The Q3 Sportback has both practicality and posing appeal. Image: Supplied While joining the masses on the recent Black Friday shopping spree I noticed that every car in the row I’d parked in was an SUV. It brought home how these high-riding vehicles are becoming ever more entrenched in SA, and nowadays they represent about one in every three new vehicle sales. The segment has spun off a recent subculture of sporty-styled vehicles dubbed crossover utility vehicles (CUVs) - or coupes on stilts, if you prefer. They have less accent on the “utility” part but they’re gaining popularity with buyers who want a vehicle that has both practicality and posing appeal. It’s a niche segment that grew 20% last year and includes cars like the BMW X2 and Mercedes-Benz GLC Coupe. The new Q3 Sportback joins the ranks as the edgier-styled cousin of the Q3 SUV. With its lower and sleeker roofline the Sportback is a likable combo of styling flair and still-reasonable utility, and at 4,500mm long the Audi is positioned between the 4,360mm BMW X2 and the 4,732mm Mercedes GLC Coupe. There’s some loss of rear headroom as penalty for the stylish vibes, but at six feet tall I was able to sit in the Sportback’s rear seat without my head touching the ceiling - though it was a close call and anyone taller may have to slouch. There aren’t any complaints about the rear legroom though, which is as ample as in the regular Q3 and makes for a roomy cabin that’s suitable for school runs and holidays. The Q3 Sportback’s a fully-fledged five-seater with three individual rear seats that are separately adjustable for leg room and backrest angle, and they fold down to expand the boot space to a very useful 1,400l. The car has the same plentiful 530l loading space as the regular Q3 under its rollout parcel shelf, but loses some capacity when items are stacked right up to the roof. The cabin lays on Audi’s usual styling flair and high-grade materials. It feels very premium and hi-tech, and there are progressively higher levels of digitisation as you tick the options boxes. A digital instrument cluster, operated via the multifunction steering wheel, comes with an integrated MMI touch radio plus as standard. For extra money owners can specify the more advanced virtual cockpit with multiple views. The top-of-the-line system which forms part of the Technology Package comes with a larger screen and MMI Navigation Plus. The infotainment system provides all the requisite smartphone connectivity, including Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and there’s a premium Bang & Olufsen audio system available at extra cost. The swanky cabin is heavily digitised, and all five seats can be individually adjusted. The swanky cabin is heavily digitised, and all five seats can be individually adjusted. Image: Supplied There’s a lengthy list of individual items that can be ticked off but Audi offers several preset packages - including Comfort, Technology, Sport, and S Line - to simplify the process of throwing extra money on options. Like the standard Q3, the Sportback is available in a 110kW 1.4l petrol turbo front-wheel-drive model called the 35 TFSI, or a 2.0l petrol turbo quattro all-wheel drive derivative bearing a 40 TFSI badge. They’re priced at R693,000 and R737,000 respectively. It is the latter version on test here, which brings 132kW to the party along with 320Nm of torque. It’s well below hot-hatch territory but feels satisfyingly peppy when scooting about the suburbs, with easy-cruising open road ability and fairly punchy overtaking. The seven-speed S tronic dual clutch auto offers the usual smooth and slick operation we’ve come to love, and the soft-voiced four-cylinder engine adds to the overall refined feel of this premium CUV. Buyers tend to choose soft-roaders for the perceived safety of their elevated seating positions rather than their off road ability, and the Q3 Sportback has minimal donga-duelling ambitions. That said, the adventure doesn’t need to end just because the tar road does. The Audi’s very proficient on rough gravel, with suspension that nicely cushions bumps and quattro drive that provides confidence-inspiring traction. It’s a neat handler too, one of the sportier SUVs when it comes to corners, making for a good all-round ride and handling balance. The Q3 Sportback enters a growing niche alongside rivals like the BMW X2 and Mercedes GLC Coupe. The Q3 Sportback enters a growing niche alongside rivals like the BMW X2 and Mercedes GLC Coupe. Eminem Apologizes To Rihanna For "Siding" With Chris Brown Over 2009 Assault

Eminem Apologizes To Rihanna For "Siding" With Chris Brown Over 2009 Assault
Eminem is in all of the headlines this morning. The legendary rapper released his new album last night, coming through with Music To Be Murdered By - Side B (Deluxe Edition). There's a bunch of stuff to unpack from the new music, including a Snoop Dogg diss at the end of "Zeus". More noticeably though, the rapper sends a sincere apology to one of his most frequent collaborators, Rihanna, for "siding" with Chris Brown after his 2009 assault of the singer, which he claims in a decade-old leaked song. Some of Eminem's most commercially successful songs -- read: "Love The Way You Lie" -- feature Rihanna. The two have made some beautiful classic records together, but their relationship hasn't always been chipper. Rihanna likely needed to find a lot of forgiveness in her heart to work with Slim Shady after a leaked song surfaced, featuring Eminem claiming that he "sided" with Chris Brown in the singer's 2009 assault of Rih. On "Zeus", Em finally apologizes for the line. Christopher Polk/Getty Images "And wholeheartedly, apologies, Rihanna/For that song that leaked, I'm sorry, Ri," says Em on the song, in which he also disses Snoop Dogg. "It wasn't meant to cause you grief/Regardless, it was wrong of me." It takes a big man to apologize for his wrongs, especially when they come from over ten years ago. Hopefully, Rihanna appreciates the apology, despite Em's intent a few years ago.

AWS Announces Four Storage Innovations

AWS re:Invent, Amazon Web Services, Inc. (AWS), an Amazon.com company (NASDAQ: AMZN), announced four storage innovations that deliver added storage performance, resiliency, and value to customers, including: Amazon EBS io2 Block Express volumes: Next-generation storage server architecture delivers the first SAN built for the cloud, with up to 256,000 IOPS, 4,000 MB/second throughput, and 64 TB of capacity (a 4x increase across all metrics compared to standard io2 volumes), to meet the performance requirements of the most I/O intensive business critical applications (available in preview). Amazon EBS Gp3 volumes: Next-generation general purpose SSD volumes for Amazon EBS give customers the flexibility to provision additional IOPS and throughput without needing to add additional storage, while also offering higher baseline performance of 3,000 IOPS and 125 MB/second of throughput with the ability to provision up to 16,000 IOPS and 1,000 MB/second peak throughput (a 4x increase over Gp2 volumes) at a 20% lower price per GB of storage than existing Gp2 volumes (available today). Amazon S3 Intelligent-Tiering automatic data archiving: Two new tiers (Archive Access and Deep Archive Access) help customers further reduce their storage costs by up to 95% for objects rarely accessed by automatically moving unused objects into archive access tiers (available today). Amazon S3 Replication (multi-destination): New capability gives customers the ability to replicate data to multiple S3 buckets in the same or different AWS Regions, in order to better manage content distribution, compliance, and data-sharing needs across Regions (available today). EBS io2 Block Express volumes deliver the first SAN built for the cloud Customers choose io2 volumes (the latest generation-provisioned IOPS volumes) to run their critical, performance-intensive applications like SAP HANA, Microsoft SQL Server, IBM DB2, MySQL, PostgresSQL, and Oracle databases because it provides 99.999% (five 9s) of durability and 4x more IOPS than general purpose EBS volumes. Some applications require higher IOPS, throughput, or capacity than offered by a single io2 volume. To address the needed performance, customers often stripe multiple io2 volumes together. However, the most demanding applications require more io2 volumes to be striped together than customers want to manage. For these highly demanding applications, many customers have historically used on-premises SANs (a set of disks accessed over the local network). However, SANs have numerous drawbacks. They are expensive due to high upfront acquisition costs, require complex forecasting to ensure sufficient capacity, are complicated and hard to manage, and consume valuable data center space and networking capacity. When a customer exceeds the capacity of a SAN, they have to buy another entire SAN, which is expensive and forces customers to pay for unused capacity. Customers told us they wanted the power of a SAN, but in the cloud, which hasn’t existed – until now. EBS Block Express is a completely new storage architecture that gives customers the first SAN built for the cloud. EBS Block Express is designed for the largest, most I/O intensive mission-critical deployments of Oracle, SAP HANA, Microsoft SQL Server, and SAS Analytics that benefit from high-volume IOPS, high throughput, high durability, high storage capacity, and low latency. With io2 volumes running on Block Express, a single io2 volume can now be provisioned with up to 256,000 IOPS, drive up to 4,000 MB/second of throughput, and offer 64 TB of capacity – a 4x increase over existing io2 volumes across all parameters. Additionally, with io2 Block Express volumes, customers can achieve consistent sub-millisecond latency for their latency-sensitive applications. Customers can also stripe multiple io2 Block Express volumes together to get even better performance than a single volume can provide. Block Express helps io2 volumes achieve this performance by completely reinventing the underlying EBS hardware, software, and networking stacks. By decoupling the compute from the storage at the hardware layer and rewriting the software to take advantage of this decoupling, EBS Block Express enables new levels of performance and reduces time to innovation. By also rewriting the networking stack to take advantage of the high-performance Scalable Reliable Datagrams (SRD) networking protocol, Block Express dramatically reduces latency. These improvements are available to customers with no upfront commitments to use io2 Block Express volumes, and customers can provision and scale capacity without the upfront costs of a SAN. In the coming months, additional SAN features will be added to Block Express volumes. These include multi-attach with I/O fencing to give customers the ability to safely attach multiple instances to a single volume at the same time, Fast Snapshot Restore, and Elastic Volumes to increase EBS volume size, type, and performance. To learn more about io2 volumes powered by Block Express visit: https://aws.amazon.com/ebs EBS Gp3 volumes decouple IOPS from storage capacity, deliver more performance, and are priced 20% lower than previous generation volumes Customers use EBS volumes to support a broad range of workloads, such as relational and non-relational databases (e.g. Microsoft SQL Server and Oracle), enterprise applications, containerized applications, big data analytics engines, distributed file systems, virtual desktops, dev/test environments, and media workflows. Gp2 volumes have made it easy and cost effective for customers to meet their IOPS and throughput requirements for many of these workloads, but some applications require more IOPS than a single Gp2 volume can deliver. With Gp2 volumes, performance scales up with storage capacity, so customers can get higher IOPS and throughput for their applications by provisioning a larger storage volume size. However, some applications require higher performance, but do not need higher storage capacity (e.g. databases like MySQL and Cassandra). These customers can end up paying for more storage than they need to get the required IOPS performance. Customers who are running these workloads want to meet their performance needs without having to provision and pay for a larger storage volume. Next-generation Gp3 volumes give customers the ability to independently provision IOPS and throughput separately from storage capacity. For workloads where the application needs more performance, customers can modify the Gp3 volumes to provision the IOPS and throughput they need, without having to add more storage capacity. Gp3 volumes deliver sustained baseline performance of 3,000 IOPS and 125 MB/second with the ability to provision up to 16,000 IOPS and 1,000 MB/second peak throughput (a 4x increase over Gp2 volumes). In addition to saving customers money by allowing them to scale IOPS independent of storage, Gp3 volumes are also priced 20% lower per GB than existing Gp2 volumes. Customers can easily migrate Gp2 volumes to Gp3 volumes using Elastic Volumes, an existing feature of EBS that allows customers to modify the volume type, IOPS, storage capacity, and throughput of their existing EBS volumes without interrupting their Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2) instances. Customers can also easily create new Gp3 volumes and scale performance using the AWS Management Console, the AWS Command Line Interface (CLI), or the AWS SDK. To get started with Gp3 volumes visit: https://aws.amazon.com/ebs/ Amazon S3 Intelligent-Tiering adds two new archive tiers that deliver up to 95% storage cost savings The S3 Intelligent-Tiering storage class automatically optimizes customers’ storage costs for data with unknown or changing access patterns. It is the first and only cloud storage solution to provide dynamic pricing automatically based on the changing access patterns of individual objects in storage. S3 Intelligent-Tiering has been widely adopted by customers with data sets that have varying access patterns (e.g. data lakes) or unknown storage access patterns (e.g. newly-launched applications). S3 Intelligent-Tiering charges for storage in two pricing tiers: one tier for frequent access (for real-time data querying) and a cost-optimized tier for infrequent access (for batch querying). However, many AWS customers have storage that they very rarely access and use S3 Glacier or S3 Glacier Deep Archive to reduce their storage costs for this archived data. Prior to today, customers needed to manually build their own applications to monitor and record access to individual objects, when determining which objects were rarely accessed and needed to be moved to archive. Then, they needed to manually move them. The addition of Archive Access and Deep Archive Access tiers to S3 Intelligent-Tiering further enhances the first and only storage class in the cloud that provides dynamic tiering and pricing. S3 Intelligent-Tiering now provides automatic tiering and dynamic pricing across four different access tiers (Frequent, Infrequent, Archive, and Deep Archive). Customers using S3 Intelligent-Tiering can save up to 95% on storage that is automatically moved from Frequent access to Deep Archive for 180 days or more. Once a customer has activated one or both of the archive access tiers, S3 Intelligent-Tiering will automatically move objects that have not been accessed for 90 days to the Archive access tier, and after 180 days to the Deep Archive access tier. S3 Intelligent-Tiering supports features like S3 Inventory to report on the access tier of objects, and S3 Replication to replicate data to any AWS Region. There are no retrieval fees when using the S3 Intelligent-Tiering and no additional tiering fees when objects are moved between access tiers. S3 Intelligent-Tiering with the new archive access tiers are available today in all AWS Regions. To get started with Amazon S3 Intelligent-Tiering visit: https://aws.amazon.com/s3/storage-classes/ Amazon S3 Replication extends the ability to replicate data to multiple destinations within the same AWS Region or across different AWS Regions Customers use S3 Replication today to create a replica copy of their data within the same AWS Region or across different AWS Regions for compliance requirements, low-latency performance, or data sharing across accounts. Some customers also need to replicate the actual data to multiple destinations (S3 buckets in the same AWS Region or S3 buckets in multiple Regions) to meet data sovereignty requirements, to support collaboration between geographically-distributed teams, or to maintain the same data sets in multiple AWS Regions for resiliency. To accomplish this today, customers must build their own multi-destination replication service by monitoring S3 events to identify any newly-created objects. They then spread out these events into multiple queues, invoke AWS Lambda functions to copy objects to each destination S3 bucket, track the status of each API call, and aggregate the results. Customers also need to monitor and maintain these systems, which create added expense and operational overhead. With S3 Replication (multi-destination), customers no longer need to develop their own solutions for duplicating data across multiple AWS Regions. Customers can now use S3 Replication to replicate data to multiple buckets within the same AWS Region, across multiple AWS Regions, or a combination of both using the same policy-based, managed solution with events and metrics to monitor their data replication. For example, a customer can now easily replicate data to multiple S3 buckets in different AWS Regions – one for primary storage, one for archiving, and one for disaster recovery. Customers can also distribute data sets and updates to all AWS Regions for low-latency performance. With S3 Replication (multi-destination), customers can also specify different storage classes for different destinations to save on storage costs and meet data compliance requirements (e.g. customers can use the S3 Intelligent-Tiering storage class for data in two AWS Regions and have another copy in S3 Glacier Deep Archive for a low-cost replica). S3 Replication (multi-destination) fully supports existing S3 Replication functionality like Replication Time Control to provide predictable replication time backed by a Service Level Agreement to meet their compliance or business requirements. Customers can also monitor the status of their replication with Amazon CloudWatch metrics, events, and the object-level replication status field. S3 Replication (multi-destination) can be configured using the S3 management console, AWS CloudFormation, or via the AWS CLI or AWS SDK. To get started with S3 Replication (multi-destination) visit: https://aws.amazon.com/s3/features/replication/ “More data will be created in the next three years than was created over the past 30 years,” said Mai-Lan Tomsen Bukovec, Vice President, Storage, at AWS. “The cloud is a big part of why developers and companies are generating and retaining so much data, and data storage is in need of reinvention. Today’s announcements reinvent storage by building a new SAN for the cloud, automatically tiering customers’ vast troves of data so they can save money on what’s not being accessed often, and making it simple to replicate data and move it around the world as needed to enable customers to manage this new normal more effectively.” Teradata is the cloud data analytics platform company, solving the world’s most complex data challenges at scale. “When your focus is analyzing the world’s data in real-time, having the right balance of price and performance is critical—for our business and our end-customers,” said Dan Spurling, SVP Engineering, Teradata. “With the release of Gp3, Teradata AWS customers will experience improved performance and throughput, allowing them to drive increased analytics at scale. With the significant improvements in Gp3 over Gp2, we expect 4x higher throughput with fewer EBS volumes per instance; enabling our customers to receive increased performance and improved instance level availability.” Embark is building self-driving truck technology to make roads safer and transportation more efficient. “We use S3 Intelligent-Tiering to store logs from our fleet of self-driving trucks. These logs contain petabytes of data from the sensors on our vehicle such as cameras and LiDARS, while also storing control signals, and system logs that we need to perfectly reconstruct everything that happened on and around our vehicles at any point in time. Keeping all of this data is critical to our business,” said Paul Ashbourne, Head of Infrastructure, Embark. “Our teams frequently access recently-collected data for their analyses, but over time, most of this data gets colder and subsets of data are not accessed for months at a time. It’s important that we continue to save older data in case we need to analyze it again, but doing so can be costly. S3 Intelligent-Tiering is perfect for us because it automatically optimizes our storage costs based on individual object access patterns. With the two new Archive Access tiers, we save even more when our fleet log data is rarely accessed. All of this happens seamlessly without our engineering team having to build or manage any custom storage monitoring systems. With S3 Intelligent-Tiering, everything just works, and we can focus less time managing our storage and more time on research and development.” Zalando is Europe’s leading online platform for fashion and lifestyle with over 35 million active customers. “We built a 15 PB data lake on Amazon S3 which has allowed employees to act on and analyze historical sales and web tracking data that they previously wouldn’t have had access to,” said Max Schultze, Lead Data Engineer, Zalando. “By using S3 Intelligent-Tiering, we were able to save 37% of our yearly storage costs for our data lake, as it automatically moved objects between a Frequent Access and Infrequent Access tier. We are looking forward to the new S3 Intelligent-Tiering Archive Access tiers to save even more on objects that are not accessed for long periods of time.” SmugMug+Flickr is the world’s largest and most influential photographer-centric platform. “We’re new to S3 Replication and have used Amazon S3 since day one. S3 Replication for multiple destinations delivers awesome options for our global data handling,” said Andrew Shieh, Director of Engineering/Operations, at SmugMug+Flickr. “We can now leverage S3 Replication in new ways, planning optimized replication strategies using our existing S3 Object tags. S3 Replication support for multiple destinations handles the heavy lifting, so we can spend more of our operational and development time thrilling our customers. Our petabytes of data in S3, fully managed by a few lines of code, are at the heart of our business. These continual improvements to S3 keep SmugMug and Flickr growing together with our partners at AWS.” About Amazon Web Services For 14 years, Amazon Web Services has been the world’s most comprehensive and broadly adopted cloud platform.
