South Africa born man became richest person in the world
Elon Musk, the outspoken entrepreneur behind Tesla Inc. and SpaceX, is now the richest person on the planet.
A 4.8% rally in the electric carmaker’s share price Thursday boosted Musk past Amazon.com Inc. founder Jeff Bezos on the Bloomberg Billionaires Index, a ranking of the world’s 500 wealthiest people.
The South Africa-born engineer’s net worth was $188.5 billion at 10:15 a.m. in New York, $1.5 billion more than Bezos, who has held the top spot since October 2017. As chief executive officer of Space Exploration Technologies Corp., or SpaceX, Musk is also a rival to Bezos, owner of Blue Origin LLC, in the private space race.
The milestone caps an extraordinary 12 months for Musk. Over the past year his net worth soared by more than $150 billion in possibly the fastest bout of wealth creation in history. Fueling his rise was an unprecedented rally in Tesla’s share price, which surged 743% last year on the back of consistent profits, inclusion in the S&P 500 Index and enthusiasm from Wall Street and retail investors alike.
Bezos would still hold a wide lead over Musk had it not been for his divorce, which saw him cede about a quarter of his Amazon stake to his ex-wife, MacKenzie Scott, and his philanthropy. He donated shares worth about $680 million in November.

Foreign reaction to the "disgraceful scenes" at the U.S. Capitol
Congress certifies Biden win after violent Capitol riot
Congress has now certified President-elect Joe Biden's 2020 election victory, despite a chaotic and deadly scene that erupted after a pro-Trump mob stormed the Capitol and delayed the proceedings.
The joint session of Congress, which is normally a ceremonial step, was halted for several hours when rioters breached the Capitol.
Proceedings resumed at about 8 p.m. ET Wednesday, with Vice President Mike Pence bringing the Senate session back into order.
The Senate and House rejected objections to throw out Georgia and Pennsylvania's electoral votes for Biden. Republicans also objected to Arizona, Nevada and Michigan's electoral votes, but the motions failed before they reached debate.
The Senate voted 93 to 6 to dismiss the objection raised by Republicans to Arizona's results, and 92 to 7 to reject the objection to Pennsylvania.
These are the senators who voted to object to some of the results of the election (and the states they objected to):
The House ultimately voted to reject an objection to throw out Pennsylvania's Electoral College votes for President-elect Joe Biden, but over half of the House Republicans backed the effort. The challenge failed by a vote of 282-138.
The GOP House minority leader, Rep. Kevin McCarthy of California, and his deputy, Steve Scalise, were among those seeking to overturn the results
Elijah McClain Case: Activists Push Back Against Motion To Dismiss Family’s Lawsuit Against Colorado City
Last week Aurora, Col., police officers and medics who were sued over the death of Elijah McClain filed to dismiss the litigation. Now activists are saying the filing is unjust and that his family’s lawsuit should continue.
McClain, was a 23-year-old Black man who was stopped by officers who believed he was suspicious, placed in a chokehold and injected with ketamine in Aug. 2019. He died three days later. He was unarmed and body camera footage showed him being brutally wrestled to the ground and gasping for breath.
The officers involved in the unwarranted arrest were put on administrative leave but they were later reinstated when prosecutors decided not to file charges, according to CNN.
An investigation into the case was reopened this summer after Colorado Gov. Jared Polis appointed the state’s attorney general to take a new look.
McClain’s family filed a federal suit against Aurora. But several Aurora police officers and members of the Aurora Fire Rescue were also named as defendants. But their lawyers said in the motion to dismiss that while McClain’s death was tragic, “deliberate or discriminatory acts or omissions” were not the cause of his death, the Associated Press reported.

Activists have sent out social media messages asking people to contact Aurora city attorney Daniel Brotzman in protest of the motion.

Meanwhile, three officers who were fired by the Aurora Police Department after posing for a photo mocking McClain’s death, are expected to appear at a hearing in December to be reinstated. However, a Change.org petition was signed by more than 60,000 people who want the three of them, identified as Officers Kyle Dittrich, Erica Marrero, and Jaron Jones, to remain off the force.
“If these officers are reinstated it will let the world know that Aurora does not want justice to be served,” Aurora resident Darlene Jones, who started the petition, told the Denver Gazette. “Aurora Police Department will be letting down Elijah McClain's family, his friends and all those who stood up with love and support.”

Google launched question hub for US publishers
Google Question Hub, accessible at questionhub.withgoogle.com, is now open for US-based publishers to sign up for. In 2018, Google launched Question Hub in regions where the company found it did not have enough content in its search index to answer searchers’ questions.
Google then started showing this box to searchers last year but told us it was for COVID related queries, but it was much broader than COVID queries.
What is Question Hub? Google says “Question Hub is a tool that enables creators to create richer content by leveraging unanswered questions. Question Hub collects these unanswered user questions and surfaces them to bloggers, writers, and content creators like you.”
It is basically a way for Google to enable searchers to tell it that the search results provided are not answering the query. Then, Google takes those questions and feeds them to publishers, who, in turn, can create content that does answer the query.
Now available to US publishers. Previously, Google launched Question Hub in 2018 for publishers in India (Hindi, English), Indonesia (Bahasa Indonesia), and Nigeria (English). Google has updated its FAQs to say it is now available also in the United States for English.
I tried it, and yes, I am able to access it for sites I have verified in Google Search Console.
What it looks like. Here are some screenshots of the tool, but if you want more screenshots, I posted a lot more on my personal blog.

Why we care. This can be an excellent way for publishers to identify content that searchers are looking for, but do not find useful search results for in Google.
In my case, I searched for Google Search-related topics that searchers could not find answers for and I was able to find a list of questions (as you see from the above screenshots) of content I can create that may solve some searchers’ questions.
Now that this is open to US publishers, many new publishers now have access to this treasure trove of information
Vitafoam’s full year profit rises by 72%, proposes N876 million dividend
Vitafoam Nigeria Plc said its after-tax profit for the year ended 30 September 2020 grew by 72% to N4.108 billion as improved revenue and lower cost of sales boosted gains.
The mattress maker disclosed in its financial statements for the review period obtained from the website of the Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE) on Monday that turnover climbed by 5.21% to N23.445 billion, up from the N22.283 billion reported in the corresponding period of 2019.

Vitafoam’s improved earnings drew strength from the diversification of operations and streams of income following the establishment of new plants across West Africa.

A cut in the cost of sales by 8.1% to N12.430 billion and finance cost by 11.4% to N930 million also helped profit.
Shareholders’ fund appreciated by 51.4%, moving from N5.970 billion to N9.040 billion.
